چکیده

The interaction of a fast electron with a photonic crystal is investigated by solving the Maxwell equations exactly for the external field provided by the electron in the presence of the crystal. The energy loss is obtained from the retarding force exerted on the electron by the induced electric field, and the photon emission probability is calculated from the far-field Poynting vector. The features of the energy-loss spectra are shown to be related to the photonic band structure of the crystal. Two different regimes are discussed: for small lattice constants a relative to the wavelength of the associated electron excitations l , an effective medium theory can be used to describe the material; however, for a;l the photonic band structure plays an important role. Special attention is paid to the frequency gap regions in the latter case.

Electrodeposited 3D Tungsten Photonic Crystals with Enhanced Thermal Stability

Photonic band gaps can emerge when materials are periodically organized with characteristic dimensions on the order of the wavelength of light. Such materials are commonly known as photonic crystals. Proposed applications for photonic crystals include a wide range of functional optical devices including lowloss optical fibers, three-dimensional waveguides, zero-threshold lasers, sensors, and en...

Luminescence and scintillation characterization of Silver doped KCl single crystal grown by Czochralski technique for photonic applications

In this study, the scintillation and optical properties of pure and silver doped potassium chloride (KCl:Ag) single crystals were reported. Pure and doped KCl bulk single crystals with a good optical quality and free from cracks were grown from the melt using Czochralski technique. Different analysis methods were used to study the optical and scintillation properties of the grown crystals. The ...

Enhancement of two-photon emission in photonic crystals.

We report the influence of photonic stopgaps on two-photon excited emission from highly efficient nonlinear chromophores infiltrated into high-quality photonic crystals. We have observed a sharp decrease (filter effect) in emission within the frequency range and direction of the stopgap as well as sharp enhancement of the two-photon excited emission associated with the stopgap's edge. This effe...

Photonic Crystals and Inhibition of Spontaneous Emission: An Introduction

In the first part of this introductory review we outline the developments in photonic band gap materials from the physics of photonic band gap formation to the fabrication and potential applications of photonic crystals. We briefly describe the analogies between electron and photon localization, present a simple model of a band structure calculation and describe some of the techniques used for ...

Breakdown of Bose-Einstein Distribution in Photonic Crystals

In the last two decades, considerable advances have been made in the investigation of nano-photonics in photonic crystals. Previous theoretical investigations of photon dynamics were carried out at zero temperature. Here, we investigate micro/nano cavity photonics in photonic crystals at finite temperature. Due to photonic-band-gap-induced localized long-lived photon dynamics, we discover that ...
